News from the Diving World

A Note from Dom

With so much news to pass on to you, it's hard to know where to begin. To organize it a bit, we've put most of the news in order by country or region of the world.

We've got new liveaboards to introduce - some just launched - some to be launched in 2012 - covering a variety of the most popular diving destinations including Indonesia, Palau, Thailand, Galapagos, and the Caribbean - and an important interior redesign to announce on the Sea Hunter.

We're introducing new destinations on popular boats: Cenderawasih Bay north of Raja Ampat in Indonesia, trips to Timor Leste & Layang,Layang in Malaysia, Clipperton Island in the Pacific, Whale Shark expeditions in the Seychelles . . . . .  a lovely new dive resort in Raja Ampat, and more.

There's information about rebreather training, the new Nautilus Lifeline, and as always, a bit of science news related to our seas.

Sit back, scroll through . . .  and enjoy.

Cheers, Dom

A quick note to express our condolences to Worldwide Dive and Sail on the loss of their lovely Mandarin Siren.  While it's always a sad day when we lose a wonderful vessel like the Mandarin Siren, the good news is that crew and passengers are all safe and sound and well taken care of and that Worldwide Dive and Sail is working long and hard to ensure that divers with future bookings will be placed on comparable trips on other boats so that their diving adventures will not be compromised.

COCOS

Sea Hunter Interior Remodel

Great news!  The Sea Hunter, which used to have 2 triple cabins now offers only twin and double cabins. The saloon and dining area were also remodelled and updated.  Here are the newest photos of the remodel.

Two beautiful suites were added to the upper deck and the addition created a slight change to both the sun deck and the bridge. The suites offer a larger living space, a flat screen TV, upper level access, and large windows. Artist Carlos Hiller hand painted beautiful murals on both suites. Suite 9 has a spotted eagle ray theme, and Suite 10 has a jack and dolphin theme.

NEW IN INDONESIA

Liveaboards

Dive in Style on a Luxury Liveaboard

The WAOW is a new luxury liveaboard whose first charter is scheduled for April 2012. She has 6 “Deluxe” cabins (23m2) - 2 “Superior” cabins (21m2) located on the rear of the main deck, with an aft deck area including lounging and dining area - plus 1 “Master” (45m2) which is located at the rear of the upper deck. This cabin will also have a spacious private sundeck for private use.

The magnificent Arenui dive liveaboard is a traditional Phinisi, whose concept is to provide you with the convenience of the finest fully equipped dive liveaboard together with all the richness, artistic touches and comforts of a top-notch luxury boutique hotel.  She manages to accomplish both goals with great ease and grace . . .

The two lovely Damai liveaboards each take up to 10 divers & have been specifically designed  for diving in the tropical waters of Indonesia.  Damai I has been in operation for 2 years & Damai II was launched in September, 2011. Both vessels are extremely luxurious, have attentive & well trained crews, plus the best equipment, exquisite cuisine & attention to detail.

Dewi Nusantara, while she has a new name, is not a new boat. However, she warrants a word here for 2 reasons.  She has been a highly popular luxury liveaboard for several years - certainly equal to the luxury boats above - and has recently chosen to take an independent course, having been previously a part of the Dancer Fleet. We recommend her highly and wish her well in her new life!

New Raja Ampat Resort

On a beautiful island in Raja Ampat, called Pulau Pef, well off the beaten track, is the new
Raja4Divers resort.

Open year round, the resort is
located 48 kilometers (30 miles) south of the equator in central Raja Ampat,  109 kilometers (68 miles) from Sorong.

The private boat transfer from Sorong to Pulau Pef takes 3+ hours depending on weather conditions.

Raja4Divers supports the local economy, fostering co-operation with the surrounding villages, employing and training many friendly Papuans, embracing and protecting Papuan culture and actively conserving the natural environment of the Raja Ampat.

The island is private with no inhabitants other than those at the resort and the entire island - with its jungle clad landscape, mountains, islets, lagoons, bays, beaches, ancient rock art, flora and fauna - is open for the guests to explore.

Besides some of the world's best diving and snorkelling, Pulau Pef offers a host of  activities close to nature: kayaking, snorkelling, volley ball, bird watching, jungle trails, photo trekking, private beaches and swimming lagoons and climbing for 360° views.

6 water bungalows are available for a maximum of 16 guests, with bungalows very suitable for family groups.   To read more click here.

 MORE INDONESIA NEWS

Oriental Siren in Timor Leste

SY Oriental Siren will be offering 10 night Timor Discovery trips starting in August 2012.  These 10 night safaris will run between August and November each year, departing from the capital city of Dili.

Timor-Leste is the official name of this tiny nation otherwise known as East Timor. It is the latest addition to the Siren Fleet's Asian dive safaris and offers the chance to explore this little dived region.

You will visit sites at Atauro and Jako Island, dive off shore pinnacles and the sloping reefs and coral gardens of the northern coast.

Lying within the Coral Triangle,
Timor-Leste has the same fantastic diversity of life as Indonesia and the Philippines.

Dugongs, the majestic sea cow, are sighted along the coast frequently, and reef sharks & mobula rays hang in the currents around Jako Island.  Schools of barracuda & tuna are sighted off the steep walls of Atauro Island, while the northern shore hosts some awesome muck diving spots at the Pertimina Pier and Tasi Tolu - where rhinopias, frogfish, octopus & seahorses are amongst the many creatures you'll find.

Siren trips sell quickly.  Contact us to reserve your spaces on this new adventure!

Cenderawasih Bay

The latest discovery in the Raja Ampat region of Indonesia is the exciting diving in Cenderawasih Bay. A few months ago, we introduced here in What's New, Scubasigns Foundation's very low-key eco-resort, Ahe Dive Resort.  At that time it was the only infrastructure in place for diving in this region.

We're pleased to be able to tell you that you have additional options now for diving in this region.

In 2012 Damai, Aurora, Seahorse, Ondina and Dewi Nusantara (ex Paradise Dancer) will each offer cruises to Cenderawasih Bay

The geological isolation of this bay from the flow of the Pacific tides and has blessed Cenderawasih Bay with a wide variety of endemic species.  Guests may even find that some normally deep-dwelling fish species can be found here in relatively shallow waters.

The species you'll encounter include countless critters and superb corals, but the bay also offers a touch of wreck-diving and to top it all off,  there is the allure of the magnificent Whale Sharks for whom Cenderawasih Bay is a year-round home.

It seems that the Whale Sharks here have a long-term relationship with the local fishermen, who feed and protect them, and that these gentle, giant creatures have little or no fear of humans in the water, allowing awesomely intimate interactions between shark and diver.

For adventure divers, this is an incredible opportunity to dive with a large community of whale sharks along with the other typical Raja Ampat marine life.  Contact us for additional information.

Nautilus Lifeline DIVER
GPS-VHF RADIO FOR DIVERS

Every year thousands of divers surface and are not able to find either their dive boat or make their way to shore.

Every one of these stories could have been a non-event if the divers had been carrying a Nautilus Lifeline GPS radio.

This is a revolutionary communication tool for divers.

The chat button allows you to communicate with any radio set to the channel that you chose.

The Hail and Distress button is set to the international distress frequency of channel 16.

The Lifeline Button uses LocateMe Technology to automatically sends your GPS coordinates to any modern marine VHF radio up to 12 mile range.

Visit the Nautilus Lifeline website for information on how to purchase this potentially lifesaving tool.

AMERICAS

Bahamas Shark Sanctuary

Finally . . .

. . . Protected

After a yearlong intense campaign and education effort, on July 5th 2011, the Bahamas government amended their national fisheries law making it illegal to target, catch, sell, import or export sharks in the countries waters--629,293 km2 Exclusive Economic Zone, hence becoming a shark sanctuary!

This was no easy feat with many obstacles,  and could not have been done without the partnership of The Bahamas National Trust (BNT), one of the most established and recognized environmental groups in the Bahamas. BNT had already waged the one of the country’s most important fishery conservation effort nearly 20 years ago, banning long lining.

With Palau, Maldives, Honduras and-now-The Bahamas, over 2 million km2 of ocean around the world is a shark sanctuary.

Nautilus Explorer
CLIPPERTON ISLAND & ISLA NATIVIDAD

Are you interested in diving an off-limits ecological reserve?
Do you like adventure coupled with an expectation of incredible world-class diving?
Are you interested in supporting a local fishing cooperative on a remote island
with a program to develop sustainable eco-tourism?

If yes,
Nautilus Explorer's newest destinations may be for you!

Isla Natividad

Isla Natividad is an island located in the El Vizcaino biosphere reserve off the coast of Baja California, Mexico.  Nautilus Explorer has been granted the privilege of working with the local cooperative to develop an ecotourism partnership.

This is the first time a liveaboard dive boat has been granted permission to bring recreational divers into the reserve.  Isla Natividad is legendary for excellent diving among the most experienced divers in Baja California.

During your journey you will be guided to the very best and most interesting dive sites by local fishermen (divers) who know these waters like the back of their hands. This is truly a joint effort and partnership.  The plan is to bring cargo and supplies to the island that has a local population of less than 400 people.

Trip includes optional hikes on-shore, visiting with the local residents and a special evening fiesta celebrating this first ever expedition. The goal is to build a special and unique dive destination.

2012 dates to be announced.

Clipperton Atoll & Socorro Island combo trips, 15 nights of pure adventure

The Nautilus Explorer offers the very rare opportunity to combine the adventure of voyaging to a remote coral atoll with diving the amazing, gentle and friendly giant pacific mantas and dolphins of Socorro Island. No other operator has ever offered dive trips to Clipperton Island.

Clipperton Island is virtually “off the map” – it is a beautiful and very remote tropical coral atoll that has been visited by very, very few divers. In fact, the Nautilus Explorer offers the only diving expeditions to have ever visited this place other than Jacques Cousteau, Scripps, the Smithsonian Institute, National Geographic and a French scientific party.

The atoll and lagoon are surrounded by a shallow barrier reef with a beautiful coral reef that descends down to a white sand bottom at 175 feet. The amount of fish life is excellent and varied and ranges from the endemic, rare and beautiful Clipperton Angel fish (we brought specimens back to the Long Beach Aquarium and Scripps Institute on our first expedition) to big schools of jacks and other panamic fish, lots of nudibranchs and macro life and more free-swimming green moray eels than you can imagine.

Next trip April 7-22, 2012.  16 days of adventure.

ARCTIC / ANTARCTIC

Oceanwide Expeditions.

Now 8 Polar Diving Itineraries

In June 1997, a group of 24 scuba divers from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and the United States joined Oceanwide for a special expedition: Ice Diving in the Arctic waters of Spitsbergen.

This successful exploration voyage was followed by an additional Arctic voyage in June 1998 and a new challenge in November of the same year: the very first commercial Antarctic diving expedition to the Falklands and the Antarctic.

Oceanwide's ensuing thorough knowledge of the Polar areas enabled them to develop voyages which combine nature cruises with diving expeditions.

The procedure of the dive operation, the descriptions of the dive sites and the decisions about the period of time and itinerary is based upon many years of dive experience by Oceanwide Expeditions and professionals who have worked in the polar areas for research and filming.

These voyages are not for beginners, you'll have to be a very experienced diver and must be familiar with cold water diving and dry suit diving (at least 20 dives). Before departure you will have to show an internationally accepted diving certificate, diver's logbook and a statement from your doctor (not older than two years) stating that you are physically healthy to practice scuba diving.

Several trips per year, at least 8 different itineraries, now include polar diving - on the Antarctic peninsula and around Spitsbergen.

See our Arctic/Antarctic page or contact us for more details

Many thanks to Goran Ehlme & Francis Deriberolles for the photos!

GALAPAGOS NEWS

Galapagos Permits - Itinerary Changes

As of 2011, dive liveaboards are no longer authorized to offer guided land visits outside of San Cristobal and Santa Cruz. This gives you a good incentive for extending your holiday by a few days to see the magic of the islands above, as well as below, the waterline!

Liveaboards can offer a maximum of three dives per day and  itineraries have changed, as Gordon Rocks & North Seymour are now off-limits to liveaboard divers.  Only land-based (day-boat) operations have access to these sites.

The additional sites now open to liveaboards are
Roca Redonda and Punta Vicente Roca (described below).

Added Dive Sites

Punta Vicente Roca is a small promontory with two coves which lie on either side of the eroded remains of a volcanic cone. It offers a great wall dive, with an amazing diversity of invertebrate life. If you follow the wall along, you’ll wind in and out of a shallow cave enjoying sponges, frogfish, octopus as well as the ever-popular red-lipped batfish.  Plenty of turtles, sea lions and sharks add to the excitement.

Roca Redonda is the tip of a volcano that rises several thousand feet from the sea floor which offers experienced divers a great dive.  It’s a popular site for sea lions, whales, dolphins, hammerhead sharks & even whale sharks – but you’ll also find barracudas, tuna, wahoos, groupers, rays and much more.  Added excitement comes from the bubbles emerging from the sea floor, indicating present-day volcanic activity below!

Refits

The Deep Blue has recently had a partial re-fit and is receiving glowing reports from divers.  There's now a BBQ on the upper deck, all cabins have plasma screens & DVD players and a hot tub will soon be added.

New Galapagos Liveaboards

Two new liveaboards launched in 2011

Darwin Buddy & Wolf Buddy
offer 7 night itineraries to Darwin & Wolf, taking a maximum of 16 divers in 8 extra-large cabins, offering state-of-the-art equipment, including photo equipment.  The boats were launched in September 2011 and are offering regular rates of $4500 including free nitrox & all drinks.

See our Galapagos pages for more details, but also we will keep you posted here on any news.  Don't hesitate to contact us for more information.

Extended Itineraries

Several of the liveaboards are offering extended itineraries in 2012 and 2013 of 10, 11 and 14 nights.  The always popular Galapagos Sky is offering some very special 10 & 14-night trips; Deep Blue has one remaining 10-night trip in 2012; Humboldt Explorer has 14-night trips available in October; the Aggressors also have 10 & 11 night trips with spaces still available.  Get your reservations in early!  Read more about Galapagos Liveaboards and see special offers & available spaces here

SEYCHELLES & ALDABRA ATOLL

Sea Star, Sea Shell & Maya's Dugong

Silhouette Cruises has begun offering a whale shark monitoring program each year in September with the Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles.

These 7-night live-aboard trips in Seychelles aim to combine the fun & excitement of swimming with whale sharks together with the enriching experience of learning more about the massive creatures by participating in actual scientific monitoring work.  The program takes place onboard the
SY Sea Star and SY Sea Bird

While snorkelling with whale sharks & participating in the research may be the top highlight of the programme, you will also experience a full complement of Seychelles’ diving & snorkelling opportunities, the charm of several different islands and authentic Seychelles hospitality.

7 night trips are available in September 2012 with microlite aircraft on board to help with spotting the sharks.  See Availability.

Also, Maya's Dugong explores the Granite Islands of the Seychelles and the World Heritage site of Aldabra Atoll.

Despite its status as one of the world's most strictly protected natural wonders, travel to Aldabra is still – and will likely always be - incredibly difficult due to its extreme isolation.  But with the
MV Maya's Dugong, a 40-metre expeditionary vessel owned and operated by Silhouette Cruises, a handful of visitors will be able to experience the atoll of Aldabra and its fascinating sights and treasures as part of an in-depth 7- night eco-tourism and diving expedition.

A variety of interesting dive sites will be accessible throughout the expedition, and may vary on each voyage depending on sea conditions, visibility and itinerary timings.

The inner islands of the Seychelles are available for diving on Sea Pearl and Sea Shell.

MALPELO & COIBA ISLANDS
Yemaya

We have just received a good news email from the Yemaya updating information about an incident which happened at Malpelo Island a few weeks ago.

"
Our last Expedition to Malpelo just came back.  It was Yemaya´s first expedition to the island after the incident with the illegal fishing. Fortunately we can confirm, that there is no reason to worry, the usual guys are all still there: Silkies, Hammerheads and Galapagos Sharks and of course all the others, Jacks, Snappers, Groupers, Murray Eels in the usual big schools that are so characteristic for Malpelo and waiting for YOU coming by and say hello....... Two warships of the Colombian Army were present, a guarantee that no further incursion for illegal fishing will happen. The Colombian government is also involved in legal issues with the Costa Rican government, trying to get persued the identified Costa Rican fisher boats."

Yemaya is making additional trips to Malpelo this year and you can find more information about this destination by visiting our Coiba & Malpelo page and see our Availability page for dates & rates.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Nautilus Swell

You probably know, at least by reputation, the Nautilus Explorer, a favorite of many divers for trips to Socorro, Guadalupe & the Pacific Northwest.

She now has a sister-ship, the
Nautilus Swell, to take over the northern routes.
Nautilus Swell has enjoyed a romantic & varied history. She underwent a $3.5 million dollar refit to bring her up to the high standard of modern liveaboard comfort and safety without losing the classic warm feeling of a vintage wooden vessel.

The Destinations - Alaska & British Colombia

Alaskan diving is some of the best cold water diving in the world. And the animals topside are just as enthralling as the critters below surface; grizzly bears ambling along the beach, bald eagles more numerous than seagulls, humpback whales blowing right beside the back deck water level as you sip your morning coffee.

B.C. diving is heaven for those who appreciate and enjoy the challenge of dry-suit diving. Expect incredible colour, amazing diversity of life, giant pacific octopus, wolf-eels, and nudibranchs galore. You'll see Giant kelp forests, and vertical walls so densely covered in life that there isn’t even a square inch in which you can touch the wall.
