Solomons PNG Master

Solomons PNG Master PS smler opt

Solomons PNG Master is a 30-meter (98-foot) steel-hulled vessel which offers 12 cabins and accommodates up to 20 guests diving the Solomon Islands & Papua New Guinea.

A word from Dom :  "The diving in Papua New Guinea is truly stunning.  The corals, the sharks, the general diversity ... combined with wreck diving & land visits add up to a very special experience.  A quick caveat. The Master doesn't pretend to be luxury.  She has the elements a serious diver needs ... but she's not a Palace Hotel.  If what you want is superb underwater experience and a large, stable liveaboard, she can be a good choice.  Don't hesitate to contact me about the pros & cons of the vessels in this destination !".....  Dominick Macan

SOLID, STRONG & SPACIOUS

Solomons PNG Master, as her name implies, offers diving trips in both Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.  With her massive 4-deck structure she guarantees plenty of space to find a quiet space in your non-diving hours. The top sun deck is dedicated to soaking up the sun. Lounge chairs are ready & waiting.  Just below, on the upper deck, you’ll enjoy an expansive covered seating area if you prefer to escape the UV rays.  The upper deck also houses 6 cabins, all with windows.  On the main deck, you'll find the interior, air-conditioned lounge/dining area which is enormous and offers DVDs, large TVs and a dedicated camera area for photographers. On the lower deck, you find the six additional cabins, including four cabins for single divers.

At the stern on the main deck is the dive deck, which will be the platform for most of your diving, and which has freshwater showers & freshwater rinse bins for equipment.  Each station has ample storage for your equipment above and below your station. The two ladders which access the dive platform provide easy access to and from the water. The dedicated camera preparation area has plenty of charging points and large rinse tanks as well as storage drawers and a large plasma screen to view and share your photos and videos.

The chef offers local cuisines while also featuring recipes from an international menu. There is lots of fresh fruit and fresh lime juice. Galley staff are also prepared to assist with special menu requirements, but please let us know in advance.

ITINERARIES

Late in the year, typically October to November, Solomons PNG Master travels to Papua New Guinea to dive the incredible sites around the Tufi fjords and the surrounding islands and reefs.  The stunning dive sites includes some terrific wreck dives.

VIEW THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THESE TRIPS AND AN ITINERARY MAP....... open

The final itinerary is, of course, always dependant upon weather, sea conditions and where the best animal sightings are at any particular time of year

Tufi - also known as "Norway of the Pacific' - provides spectacular scenery with "fjords" that were created by the ancient eruption of 3 volcanoes as well as amazing marine diversity and a variety of diving experiences including fjord, reef and wreck diving.

HIGHTLIGHTS OF THE TUFI DIVES:

Mulloway, one of Tufi's best-known sites, is a classic sea-mount where the current is strong, bringing plankton and bountiful food for thousands of fish. You’ll experience a parade of life … observing great hammerheads, reef sharks, rays and schools of jacks and barracudas in a wild search of food.

Humman’s Colour Book is a site that has it all. Schools of oceanic triggerfish, titan triggerfish (by the dozens), golden spadefish, blackspine surgeonfish, pacific sailfin tangs, sleek unicornfish, scissortail sergeants, blue-spotted ribbontail ray, oriental sweetlips, many spotted sweetlips, scalefin anthias, wide-band fusiliers, great barracuda, and more.

Cecilia's Reef has walls which descend steeply all around the bank, disappearing into the blue. On the reef, shoals of fusiliers, red lutjanidae and surgeonfish are commong. Look closer and you’ll find camouflaged shrimps, crabs, nudibranchs, gobies and with careful observation a Rhinopias.

Wongs' Reef lies east of Fergusson Island and diving here depends on the weather; it cannot be done when there are strong winds. Visibility is nearly always excellent. Abounding in sparkling coral formations, fish, clams, sweetlips, groupers, anemones, clownfish, parrotfish and surgeonfish, this reef is particularly attractive for its extraordinary variety of fish species.

Observation Point is a sheltered site where you will find three different types of habitat: sandy sea bed, a small meadow of seagrass, and a mangrove forest. In the deeper waters you can find large pink alcyonarians, a metre tall, providing a home to small gobies and shellfish. The sea bed is mainly sandy and scattered with seagrass and you’ll encounter some great critters, various juvenile fish and black & white anemonefish.  The mangroves here are a great place for a night dive.

Dobu Bubble Bath at Normanby Island is quite unique, with its bubbles coming out of the seabed at 40+ degrees Celsius. A macro lovers site: white-speckled headshield slugs, blue velvet headshield slugs, brilliant headshield slugs, bus stop chromodoris nudi, flatworm (pseudoceros sp4), cigar wrasses, moorish idols, spagetthi worms, mantis shrimp.

B17 Bomber 'Blackjack' is one of the world's finest aircraft wreck dives. The historic B17 lies on a white sandy bottom in near-perfect condition at a depth of 45 metres. Bottom time is brief whilst diving and a special dive profile with compulsory safety stops are required, followed by a minimum surface interval of 4 hrs. For those not qualified or comfortable participating in this dive, there is a stunning reef nearby and the plane can be viewed from shallower depths.

Pistoff B25 Mitchell Bomber was badly hit in 1943 and damaged but her pilot 1st Lt. Lett managed to escape from the attacking Japanese Zeros. Lett determined a ditching near Wanigela, south of Tufi, was a better option than flying over the mountains of PNG. The aircraft ditched safely and the entire crew were rescued by local villagers and later evacuated to Port Moresby. The aircraft is in good condition with most things still intact.
