Rocio del Mar

Rocio del MarExt1 opt786 opt

The very popular 110-foot (34-meter) Rocio del Mar can accommodate 20 divers. Her itineraries include Sea of Cortez and the Revillagigedos Archipelago which includes Socorro.

A word from Dom :  "Hugely popular, this vessel is always a good choice for either Socorro or Sea of Cortez, but finding available space is the problem!  She books well in advance.  Not a luxury liveaboard but a wonderful warm welcome is always on hand and the crew will know your name by the end of the first day.  An excellent adventure boat.".....  Dominick Macan

ROBUST & RELAXED FOR LONG CROSSINGS

Rocio del Mar was custom-designed for diving the waters on Mexico's west coast and in the Sea of Cortez.  The owners know this region well and wanted a vessel that was large, stable and comfortable.  Rocio is the result.  She isn't a luxury vessel, but she has 4 decks and plenty of comfortable living space.  On the top deck you'll find a good-sized sundeck, with lounge chairs set up in covered and uncovered areas, plus a great bar & barbecue area and an al fresco dining area for meals, when the weather permits.  The upper deck houses 2 large staterooms, the indoor salon and dining area ... plus a spacious, covered & protected outdoor salon on the aft deck. The dive deck is located on the main deck along with the other 8 staterooms.

The dive deck is ample and well-designed, with plenty of room for gear and a large camera table for photographers. Nitrox is available and a satellite phone is available onboard for emergencies

ITINERARIES

October through May, Rocio del Mar offers adventurous trips to the Revillagigedo Archipelago, better known as Socorro.  Socorro is just one of the 4 islands which are home to the most magnificent parade of pelagics that the mind could conjure up. The remaining months of the year, Rocio offers Sea of Cortez trips.

The final itinerary is, of course, always dependent upon weather, sea conditions and where the best animal sightings are at any particular time of year

ITINERARY & DIVING HIGHLIGHTS

This region of the Pacific attracts some of the world’s largest ocean pelagic animals: schooling hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks, dolphins, silky sharks, Galapagos sharks, oceanic white tips sharks, whale sharks, jacks and barracuda, tuna, wahoo … and mantas.  The season to dive here is from October through May.  The island in this group of islands attracts the most mantas is San Benedicto and the most iconic dive site is called "The Boiler". It’s a submerged sea mount and cleaning station where you’re likely to see a half dozen mantas at one time.

Socorro Island itself is also a magical manta location and you’ll have interactions with these animals that you’ll never forget. Add into the recipe the sighting of sharks, lots of silkies, s well as other species … and it all makes for diving thrills beyond the imagination.

At Roca Partida, you’ll get many of the shark species plus mantas and dolphins and enormous schools of pelagic fish.

From January to April, you can usually add humpback whales to the list of animals. You can hear them singing under the water …. and can see them passing during certain of your dives. Normally we only swim with whales but here, while they’re on their migration, they don’t seem to object to the presence of humans in scuba gear. They’re likely to appear at any – or all – of the islands you visit.

The crossing from Los Cabos San Lucas to the Socorro Islands takes approximately 26-28 hrs. It is open sea and can be quite rough.  The boat is wonderfully stable but please be prepared in case you need medication.
